Path to becoming an instructor

• First aid certificate

• Distance learning course - theory

• Practical course

• Exams in theory and practice

Distance learning course in theory:

After submission of the registration and application documents and payment of the course fee, the student receives the distance learning materials for the course of study.

These can be worked through any time before the practical Training.

Learning contents:

A detailed instruction manual with basic instruction for Kite, Windsurf, SUP and Catamaran beginners; lectures on: methodology/didactics, physics of sailing, laws, meteorology, etc.; a complex of questions and answers relating to the distance learning materials; practical training and the final theory exam.

Practical course:

In the practical course, the student works as an assistant trainer under the direction of a WWS head instructor/instructor directly at the school in order to thus obtain practice-oriented training for water sportspersons.

By working at the school, conducting courses and holding and grading exams, along with the overall organisation, the student receives realistic training and experience in the management of a water sports centre.

Depending on the license, the student’s practical training takes at least one week. An extension of the training is possible with the agreement of the instructor.

The student’s existing practical and theoretical knowledge is decisive for the duration of the practical course. A shorter duration of training is possible in exceptional cases.

Course contents of the practical training

  • Holding beginning and advanced Courses
  • Children's courses as well as individual and group Courses
  • Instruction with technical equipment: simulators, boats, buoys, videos, projectors, boards, etc.
  • Theory lessons and exam preparation for the students
  • Holding exams in theory and practice; test grading
  • Use of safety devices and equipment; rescue and first aid measures.

Examination

Theory examination:

This consists of an oral exam and a written exam. Depending on the level of the student’s training, it can be taken as multiple exams during the practical training in order to give the trainer an opportunity to supplement the student’s knowledge as preparation. The exam questions are taken from the question-and-answer complex of the distance learning course. Additional questions concerning the water sports area and the school’s training mode are possible.

Practical examination:

The practical evaluation of the student extends over the entire period of practical training in order to obtain a realistic overall picture of the student’s level of proficiency. How successfully the student teaches the kitesurfing students and the proper execution of wind surfing courses in terms of methodology and didactics form the most important criteria.

Practical surfing requirements:

Safe mastery of Kite & Sailing and surfing with the corresponding techniques and manoeuvres, including in conditions with strong winds.

Safety:

Observance of the special situation of the Watersport Sailing and surfing area. Practical and theoretical knowledge in first aid and water rescue. Safety and nature conservation rules.

Licenses fees

You can find the complete information about our fees here.

As a non-profit association, we keep the costs of training as low as possible in order to make these courses affordable for students and pupils among others.
In addition, the WWS schools/colleges benefit from the participation of the students in the practical training.
For the practical training, you can freely choose from the dates and times during the indicated opening hours of the training centres. With the agreement of the trainer, you can also extend the training by one week free of charge in order to gain more extensive practical experience in the school setting.
You will receive current information on the Instructor Colleges when you request the distance learning course: addresses, locations, training opportunities, etc. You can then contact the instructors and centre owners yourself for more information.

If you live near one of the instructor colleges listed, you can also complete the training over several Weekends!

Please send your application for the training and all the relevant papers to the WWS headquarters in Garmisch Partenkirchen in good time. Students bear the expenses of travel, accommodation, meals and insurance themselves.

If you already have adequate experience in training windsurfing students, the practical training can be shortened or even completely omitted on request. (School owners, extended practical experience as a windsurfing instructor, description of instructor licenses from other associations).
